Dear Dog,

I just remodeled my kitchen and installed the most beautiful ceramic counter tops. I’d like to keep them looking shiny and new. Are there any tips or pointers you could give me on what (or what not) to do when it comes to their upkeep?

Dear Bob,

First, make sure you never cut directly on the surface, always use a cutting board. Also, be sure to lay down potholders or trivets before putting any kind of hot dishes or pots down on the counter top. When it comes to cleaning, use a mild detergent; and if you’re using a store-bought cleaning product, read the label carefully and do NOT use it if it says may damage ceramic tiles. Never use scouring pads or gritty cleansers, seeing as they will scratch the finish. Don’t have the proper solution in your house to clean your new ceramic counter top? Just mix a small amount of bleach with lukewarm water, apply, and then wipe the solution away.
